BAMBOO, with partners Oceans of Energy and Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics CSP, are cited in a news article of the German business newspaper Handelsblatt.
"Hybrid (here PV+wind) energy systems ensure higher “off-shore" grid utilization, which reduces costs” is stated by Bengt Jäckel, from Fraunhofer CSP. The technology has its highest potential when integrated within wind parks. Then, the electrical infrastructure – transformers, submarine cables, on- and offshore electrical lines – would already be in place, and the offshore solar plants can be connected right to it.
Allard van Hoeken, Oceans of Energy's CEO, explains how Oceans of Energy has been developing the offshore solar technology since 2016 and has been testing it in the North Sea since 2019. He states that in the BAMBOO project the goal is to scale up the technology to 1km2 standardized building blocks of 50-200 MW. “In the long-term we should see as much potential for offshore solar as offshore wind, just one percent of the North Sea area for offshore solar would be enough to cover the entire current electricity demand of the Netherlands of 100 GW,” van Hoeken calculates.
